The Whetstone Inn is an old establishment that is located on South Road in Marlboro, Vermont, a tiny community typical of Northern New England. There are four buildings that comprise the center of Marlboro: The Whetstone Inn, the Church, the Post Office-Municipal Offices, and the town's assembly hall.
According to the book, "Vermont Inns & Taverns" by John C. Wriston, Jr., found at the inn, around 1772, the Gen. Jonas Whitney hotel, run by Jonas Whitney, was established at a crossroads along the now defunct Windham County Turnpike. Later, it became the Marlboro Center Hotel, and is now the Whetstone Inn.
The present place is a two story white building with an addition on one side. The inn furnishings are simple yet tasteful. The food - absolutely incredible (ask for the waffles for breakfast, though the french toast is great, too). The rooms are spacious, and many have a private bath. One of the rooms was once the dance hall for the town!
If you want true Vermont character, talk to the inn people. There are many stories that Harry can tell, but you'll have to visit to hear them.
My visit was for a gathering of friends (surpise party) in early April 2008. It was a great stay, one that I'll always remember!
