In 1956, André Pignarre, Director of the Eiffel Tower restaurants, was impressed by river tourism in Amsterdam and decided to found a sightseeing boat company, using small launches.
In 1987, the Bateaux Parisiens company was bought by the Sodexho Group, the world caterer, that also has other river tourism subsidiaries in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Bateaux Parisiens proposes cruises in the heart of Paris, with or without meals, on entirely glassed-over boats. The fleet totals 19 boats. 5 boats for restaurant cruises. 7 sightseeing boats. 7 boats for the Batobus service.
The boats are trimarans with an open air terrace at the stern. A commentary including music evokes the places and periods visited and is broadcast on individual handsets in 13 languages.
Bateaux Parisiens carries more than two million passengers every year.
The Batobus is a "hop on, hop off" water bus on the River Seine. Much like "Open Tour" bus service in large touristic cities, you pay a flat fee for a single or multiple day pass with unlimited use of the service during that period. There are eight points of embarkation along the Seine, one of which is near the Bateaux Parisiens embarkation point near the Eiffel Tower.
