This is a nice stations of the cross that leads from the side of the old church down a hill to an outside sinkhole, shaded shrine area. The shrine area has a waterfall and next to an outdoor altar with benches in a natural amphitheatre. Very, very beautiful. Area below is called the "Lady of St Joseph Shrine".
In geologic terms, it is called the "Schnurbusch Karst Window".
The hand carved wood stations are on wood posts and protected in bird-house like enclosures. Glass protects the front from the elements.
The church is very nice too, with a cemetery in the front of the church. Usually church cemeteries are in the side or rear but this one is in the front, only a few feet from the front door.
The village of Apple Creek consists of a few homes and the church property.
Although this is really off the beaten track, I highly, highly recommend this trip if you are interested in church history or interesting natural areas.
