The Roman Fountains were installed in 1738-39. Each fountain has octagonal bowls in two tiers ornamented with carvings and gilt.
The fountains were moved about 25 feet in 1763, to obtain a better perspective. They were originally built of lead lined wood and in 1798-180 they were reconstructed in marble. Lead masks were added to the decoration in 1817.
Both fountains were destroyed during World War II. They were restored to working order in 1949 and in 1954 the masks and decorations were recreated from old drawings, photographs and a surviving cast.
