This is one of two large fountains which flank the basin of the Grand Cascade at Peterhof.

When Peter the Great planned his country palace at Peterhof he included two large bowl shaped fountains placed in the gardens to the left and right of the Grand Cascade. Work began on the fountains in 1720 and although Peter had specified marble bowls they were actually constructed with lead plated oak.
In 1854 the fountains were renovated using polished Carrara marble. The design is actually a bowl within a bowl. A center marble bowl, 13 feet in diameter, stands on a pedestal in the center of a shallow marble bowl 84 feet in diameter. The fountain sends a jet of water over 30 feet into the air.
The fountain pictured is the one to the east, which is also known as the French Fountain because the hydro technical work was done by a French engineer. The other fountain of the pair, constructed by and Italian team, is the Italian Fountain.
