Kings Pinnacle, at an elevation of 1,705 feet, is in a registered natural heritage area that features sheer vertical cliffs ranging from 100 to 150 feet in height. Geologically classified as kyanite-quartzite monadnocks, only the strength of quartzite has allowed the pinnacle to withstand the wind, water and other forces that eroded less resistant peaks. (Info from NC Parks Website.)
The trail is strenuous but worth every minute. The park service will tell everyone that the trail can take as long as 2 1/2 hours to hike, but my family and I regularly hike the trail with kids (8 and 10) in tow in 55 minutes.
Park at N 35 12.812 W081 17.628 is next to the park visitor's center. Step in for a map and enjoy the small nature museum and learn more about the park's history.
There is another peak (Crowder's Mountain)as well and both can be done in the same day if you in the appropriate shape for them.
Altitude in Feet: 1705
