On the campus of St. Joseph's College on the south end of Rensselaer, Indiana is a small park. Within this small park are numerous little retreats and remembrances to loved ones, friends of the college and former students.
Visitors walk a carefully paved trail by St. Francis of Assissi and through a carefully crafted stone grotto that's over 100 years-old. The Lourdes Grotto depicts one of the eighteen moments when St. Bernadette was met by a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The grotto includes a cave that houses a shrine with a marble statue of Christ at the Garden of Gethsemane.
After the Lourdes Grotto, visitors begin a journey through the twelve Stations of the Cross. Crafted carvings tell the story of the Passion in a circular path that will bring visitors back to Station 1 after they have stepped past Station 12. This place of circular beginning and end is marked by a plaque embedded in the path that reads:
Stations of the Cross
Erected in Memory of
Mr. & Mrs. Nicholas W. Baechle
1951
Each bench has a dedication to a loved one or friend that visitors may contemplate as they rest along the walk. Parking is available many places throughout the campus and immediately on all sides of the park.
