Montgomery, which was named for the famous general, Richard Montgomery, began as two villages and later was founded in 1817. The intersection of the two villages being in what is today known as Court Square.
General Montgomery was an Irish-American who served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary war. He led his army into Canada and died while trying to invade Quebec and capture it on December 31, 1775 during a snowstorm. His body is at St. Paul's Chapel in New York City.
