Ty Cobb was born in Georgia and was known throughout his major league baseball career as “The Georgia Peach.” His major league career included 21-years with the Detroit Tigers and the final two years with the Philadelphia Athletics during which time he set more than 90-Major League Records. Some of those records are still standing today, including the highest career batting average (.367) and the most career batting titles (12). In 1936 Ty Cobb was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame, joining Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson an Walter Johnson as member of the inaugural Hall of Fame Class. Ty Cobb died on July 11, 1961 in Atlanta, Georgia. He is entombed in the Cobb Family mausoleum at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Royston, Georgia.

Ty Cobb was born on December 18, 1886 in Narrows, Georgia. He began his Major League baseball career on August 30, 1905 when he took the field for the Detroit Tigers. In 1906 the Tigers awarded him a $1,500 contract and became the Tigers full time centerfielder. In one notable 1907 game, Cobb reached first, stole second, stole third, and then stole home on consecutive attempts (He did this twice more in his career). He finished that season with a league high .350 batting average, 212 hits, 49 steals and 119 Runs batted in. At age 20, Cobb became the youngest player to win a batting championship and held this record until 1955 when fellow Detroit Tiger Al Kaline won the batting title when he was one day younger than Cobb. Cobb played for the Tigers from 1905 – 1926. He began the 1927 season with the Philadelphia Athletics and played for them through the end of the 1928 season. On September 11, 1928, Ty Cobb strolled to the plate for the final time, an popped out against Hank Johnson. Following that game he announced his retirement ending his career with 23-consecutive seasons batting .300 or better, which is a major league record that is not likely to be broken. Ty Cobb retired a very rich and successful man and returne to his farm in Georgia. He spent his retirement travel, hunting, fishing, and playing golf. He also enjoy trading stocks which allowed hime to increase his personal wealth. Cobb was a major stockholder in the Coca-Cola Corporation which alone made hime a very wealthy man. In 1936 the Major Leage Baseball Hall of Fame inducted it first class. Ty Cobb was named on 222 or 226 ballots, more than any other member of the inagural class, which inclued Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson an Walter Johnson. Ty Cobb died on July 17, 1961 at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. At the time of his death his estate was valued at better than $11-million dollars, a quarter of which was used to established theCobb Educational Fund, which is still handing out schlorships to deserving Georgia Students. Ty Cobb is resting in the Cobb Family mausoleum at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Royston, Georgia.
