Arran is a delightful island in the Firth of Clyde in SW Scotland. The main route is Ardrossan-Brodick, however, a useful small ferry runs from the north of the island across to the Kintyre peninsula. This makes for a great trip out to the west.

To drive from Ardrossan to Claonaig is about 140 miles. Using Arran as a stepping stone makes it only 15 miles, plus two ferry journeys. Arran is a great place to visit anyway, but the ferry from Lochranza to Kintyre creates a link to the lands and islands further out west.
The ferry is quite small and the terminals at either side have nothing in the way of facilities. During the winter the service runs further up the Clyde to Tarbet in Loch Fyne, about 90 minutes. During the summer it's a shorter nip across to Claonaig, about 25 minutes.
