This is a single lock on The River Thames at Richmond. There is a footbridge across the river which incorporates three vertical sluice gates between the arches to stem the flow of water as The Thames is still tidal at this point.

The purpose of this lock/barrage is to keep the water at or above half tide level and the lock is bar for 2 hours either side of high tide when the sluice gates are opened and river trffic can pass below the main bridge structure.

The lock is still used for river traffic which is pretty much all private pleasure craft with the occasionl police boat passing through.
