The Pickens County Courthouse may seem to be just another county courthouse sitting on a town square in a small Southern town. But this one has a dark story.
In 1878 Henry Wells was brought to the garrett to protect him from an angry mob that accused him of burning down the previous courthouse. When the crowd say Henry's terrified face in the garrett window when a flash of lightning illuminated him, they broke into the courthouse, captured him, and hung him from a nearby tree. But the next morning, Henry's face was still staring down at them from that window, and it is still there today. No amount of washing has been able to remove it. Even when the window pane is replaced, the face reappears.
The Wikipedia article does a great job of telling how the commonly told story of Henry Wells and the face in the window came to be.
