Description:
Junior Samples was born August 10, 1926 in Georgia. It is said that his career in comedy began when he got on a local radio show because of a huge, stuffed fish he carried around in his pickup truck. His story almost got him into trouble with the local game warden, but not before folks in the area had heard his story and were hooked on the humor! According to “Hee Haw’s” producer, Sam Lovullo, in his book, ''Life in the Kornfield: My 25 Years at Hee Haw,'' Junior was relatively new to the performance scene when he was tapped to work on "''Hee Haw.'' He was not well educated and didn't have any knowledge of how a set worked. His first few attempts with cue cards and jokes that were written for a professional comedian only made him nervous. However, the show's producers and writers soon saw that his hilarious delivery was priceless, and once they figured out how to work with him, the formula was successful. According to Roy Clark's biography, "My Life In Spite of Myself!” Junior had all his teeth pulled to make him look more authentic. His portly build, toothless grin, and down-to-earth nature endeared him to his fans. He was best known on the show as the car salesman who held up the sign with the phone number "BR5-49." He died on November 13, 1983 of a heart attack. He is buried in the Sawnee View Gardens Cemetery in Cumming, GA.
