Tucked away in Shenley Lodge, The Old Beams is a former farmhouse that was developed and reconstructed as an inn in 1995. It is owned by McMullen Brewers of Hertford, and their AK and Country Best brews head the list of beers served in the bar. Steve and Shirley arrived as tenants in 2003, and the inn is open all day for food as well as drinks. Steve and head chef Lisa Partridge do a great job in the kitchen, producing a wide variety of dishes for the printed menu and the specials board. Sandwiches, baguettes, jacket potatoes and ploughman's lunches provide excellent quick snacks, while those wanting a full meal might start with stilton and garlic mushrooms or duck and apricot terrine and move on to battered cod, baked trout, lamb tagine or a splendid chicken, gammon and leek pie.To finish, perhaps chocolate waffle cake or apple and blackberry flapjack crumble.
Diners can eat in the 70-cover non-smoking restaurant or anywhere else in the pub, and children are always welcome. The large lawned garden, with lots of picnic benches, a pond and an old farm wagon, is a real asset in the summer months. The area around the Old Beams still retains something of a village atmosphere though in the shadow of Milton Keynes. This modern town offers space, style and every amenity, and its `suburbs' include the Shenleys, Whaddon and the one-time railway centre of Bletchley, where the great visitor attraction is Bletchley Park, the Victorian mansion that housed the wartime code-breakers. This major place of interest is just a short drive from the Old Beams.
