F-82
"Twin Mustang"

The design by North American in 1944 of the F-82E was an outgrowth of the P-54 success in World War II.  Though the design was based  on the P-54 it was a completely different aircraft.  Many changes were made to achieve greater greater distance and speed. Both engine throttles and propellers were controllable from either cockpit.  The left cock pit contained normal flight and engine instruments while the right cockpit had sufficient instruments for relief and emergency operation.  It was used as a fighter, a long-range escort, long-range reconnaissance, night fighter, attack bomber, rock fighter and interceptor.  Two-hundred-seventy-three of these were built.  Models "B" to G" were officially changed to F-82 in June 1948.  On 28 February 1947 the "Betty Joe" flown by Col. Robert Thacker and Lt. Jonard, set a non-stop record for a fighter aircraft, flying 4,968 miles from Honolulu to New York in 14 hours, 31 minutes, and 50 seconds, with an average speed of 341.9 miles per hour.  The F-82 was used at the beginning of the Korean Conflict in 1950 and was officially credited with shooting down the first enemy aircraft of the Korean Conflict.  The pilot of this aircraft was Lt. William G. Hudson of the 68th All-Weather Fighter Squadron assigned to the 5th Air Force.  Armament consisted of six .50-caliber guns as standard, with some models carrying 8 additional guns in a special center-section Nacelle 25 rockets mounted on racks underneath the wings or 7,200 ponds of bombs.
