P-47
"Thunderbolt"

This P-47N is painted in colors representing the P-47D flown by Lt. Col. Francis S. Gabreski while leader of the 61st Fighter Squadron 56th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force.  The markings on the plane show the "D" Day invasion stripes and the 28 confirmed air victories made by Lt. Col. Gabreski.  The P-47 commonly called the "Jug" first flew in May 1941 and was the first over over 15,000 to be produced.  The Thunderbolt went into action in the European Theater in May 1943 with the 4th Fighter Group.  The P-47 made history as a long-range escort for bombers on deep penetration raids into Germany, and as a ground support and attack fighter bomber in both Europe and the Pacific.  The Jug could take an unbelievable amount of punishment due to its heavy armor and solid construction.
