T-28
"Trojan"
The T-28 was designed for the USAF to combine both the primary and the basic
training characteristics into one aircraft. The XT-28 first flew 26
September 1949. Some 1,194 T-28A's were produced to replace the T-6
(Texan) in the USAF Pilot Training Program. The aircraft were delivered to
the Air Training Command (ATC) from 1950 to 1953. In 1952, under the
policy to standardize all training aircraft for the U.S. military, the T-28 was
adopted by the U.S. Navy and upon modification, the T-28Bs and C's were
produced. In finding that the T-28 was not satisfactory as a primary
trainer, the Air Force adopted the lower-power T-34 to provide a 30-hour
beginning course for student pilots prior to the T-28A training. The T-28D
and three YAT-28E's were developed in 1962 as armed counterinsurgency (ground
attack) aircraft. The "E" models were modified to use turboprops and
supplied to foreign nations through Military Assistance Programs (MAPS).
