St Colmcille founded a monastery here in approximately 575AD and the last known abbot died in 1503. John Butler Yeats, Yeats great grandfather was Rector here 1811 – 1846. Beside the road is the stump of a Round Tower which was struck by lightening in 1396. Tradition says that it will ultimately fall on the wisest man who passes it! The High Cross consists of what were two separate parts originally. The east face depicts Adam and Eve, David and Goliath etc while the west face shows the Crucifixion.
