Some town's claim to fame may be they grow more of something than anywhere else. Or it can that they have the largest something or other. Zapata has the fact that the world record hang flying encampment is held there. The reason is the fantastic winds that allow more hang gliding records to set from this little town in the Rio Grande Valley than anywhere else in the world.
Check out the Wikipedia article, it has several links to learn more about this unusual town. Better yet, visit Zapata, especially in July when the encampment takes place, because you just might be "blown away" with what a great place it is.
Zapata, being the county seat of the county by the same name is justifiably proud of the gleaming, new courthouse building that dominates the town.
There is also the hang gliding records. Even the sign at the airport gets into the act.
