This cross was originally used as one of the waymarkers for the Abbots Way. This was route across Dartmoor from Buckfastleigh Abbey to Tavistock Abbey. During the 16th century, however, it was used as one of the four boundary markers for the manor of Brent. Within this manor were the parishes of Dean Prior, Harford and Princetown.
