Thhe original building dated back to 1783, but was destroyed by fire in 1803. The new building was designed by the architect of the U.S. Catpitol - Benjamin Latrobe, and completed in 1804. Local limestone was used to build the structure, which became a common theme throughout the campus.
The structure was used briefly as an emergency hospital for wounded Confederate & Union soldiers following the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
Old West was added to the list of National Historic Landmarks in 1963, and currently houses classrooms as well as administrative offices.
