The Findlaters story begins in Scotland but moves to Dublin by 1823, where Alex Findlater had established himself selling whiskey, wine and ales. Within a few decades he had started other businesses in England and built the Mountjoy brewery, which was located across the road from Croke Park. The family name was forever engraved in the history of Parnell Square when in the 1860s Alex Findlater underwrote the cost of building the elegant Presbyterian church which stands on the corner near the Municipal Gallery. It is known colloquially as Findlater's Church.
