St.Cuthberts Parish church of Aldingham is thought to have been founded in1147,The Norman round arches and pillars of the South arcade still remain, the church is simple in style and architecture, but that is part of it's appeal to the many walkers and other visitors who call here.
A couple of points of interest are,In the church are 2 bells which were bought by parishioners from Furness Abbey after the Dissolution.
secondly,in 1932 when some restoration work was being carried out,a hole measuring 5inches by 3 inches was found set in the wall next to the alter,it is thought to be a leper hole of pre reformation days when leprosy was common in England, where bread was given to the lepers by means of a long wooden shovel by the priest.
The battlements on the Western Tower are 15th century.
There has been many improvements and alterations over the century's.
Date the Church was built, dedicated or cornerstone laid: 01/01/1147
