The descriptive plaque about the piece reads:
"Designed to stimulate the senses and renew the spirit, this sculpture offers a location for rest and reflection. Lizette R. Jaeke made a major gift in honor of her husband, Harold T. Jaeke, which enabled Mayo Foundation to commission The Nature of Things from artist William Carlson.
The Nature of Things represents a full spectrum of life. Offset columns evoke a sense of antiquity. They portray the majesty and imperfections of life, and the passage of time. A large sphere symbolizes the universe and continuity of life. Prisms of glass create delightful spectrums of light that reflect on the water and warm-hued stone."
