This tram subway ran from Holborn in the North to Waterloo Bridge in the South. It was opened on 24 February 1906 (Holborn to Aldwych only) and fully opened all the way through to Waterloo on April 1908. It contained two underground tramway stations: Holborn and Strand.
Saturday, 5th April 1952, trams ran through the Subway for the last time.
It has had various uses since then: Part of it is now a road subway (the Strand Underpass); a temporary headquarters for Army Fire personnel during a Fire Brigade strike; a flood control centre (a flood control centre in a tunnel? yes indeed!); a storage area for buses.
This waymark is of the North Portal. The Southern Portal is under Waterloo bridge (although the tunnel is now interrupted by the Strand Underpass). There was some construction work going on under Waterloo Bridge when I visited (see picture) I peeked inside but couldn't see much at all.
