The town hall was built in 1884 in the style of the time, and out of local sandstone. Some ornate carvings adorn the building together with a fancy clock tower and weather vane. The clock still tells the time but much else has changed.

Dalton is the ancient and historic capital of Furness and has approximately 8,000 residents. With local government reorganisation in 1974 Dalton became part of South Lakeland District Council.

Dalton with Newton Town Council was established in 1987 to serve the population of Dalton and Newton and has 10 elected members. The Council are not currently service providers but aim to enhance the area in which we live for the benefit of both residents and visitors to the Town.

At one time the end of the town hall building housed the fire station. This is now home to the Town Council. The rest of the town hall has been turned into flats. Large glass doors fill the old fire engine entrance.

The Town Council is open 9.30-2.30 Tuesday to Friday.
