This relatively short, south flowing river, about 53 miles (86 KM)long, flows into the White Lake. The Volga-Baltic waterway follows about 26 miles of the original Kovzha River bed upstream from the lake. This lower portion of the river has been greatly altered to make it navigable by large ships. Dams on the Sheksna River on the other side of the White Lake have raised the water lever in the Kovzha and it joins the lake as a wide bay, gradually narrowing to become a river, which has been further altered by channelization and dredging. A series of canals and locks connects the Kovzha with the north flowing Vytegra River, continuing the waterway toward the large lakes north of this area.

The river flows through a remote, heavily forested area with few settlements.
