"The Westin St. Francis is a luxury hotel in the Union Square district of San Francisco, California. The hotel opened on March 21, 1904. The interior was destroyed in the 1906 Earthquake but the structure survived and the hotel re-opened in late 1907. After several expansions over the years, the hotel is one of the largest at nearly 1,200 rooms, its imposing 1972 tower and glass elevators now rising 394 ft (120 m) above the square.
The hotel is distinctive for a historic lobby master clock, the first in the Western United States, and celebrity chef Michael Mina's self-named lobby restaurant, which was formerly the Compass Rose and before that the Patent Leather Bar. The hotel displays a small collection of photographic prints produced by Ansel Adams to advertise the old Patent Leather Bar, and keeps some quaint old traditions such as an official hotel historian and the only known silver coin cleaning service for guests."
