Born in the ancient capital of Ayuttaha, Taksin is credited with turning the tide against the war with the Burmese army and reuniting Thailand. He was crowned as king of Siam (later Thailand) in 1768. Legend has it that he went insane and was overthrown in a coup in 1782 and later executed. The stories about his death (or maybe it was a substitute who was beaten to death in a velvet bag and the king really did live out his years in a remote monastery) and whether or not his childhood friend and fellow general Chakri was instrumental in the coup in order to take the thrown make for interesting reading. Despite all the mystery, Taksin is still a favorite in Thailand.
