Photo (Digital File:ric008322) comes from USGS Photo Archive (visit link). The original photo was published in 1905 in USGS Bulletin 252, Preliminary Report on the Geology and Water Resources of Central Oregon, by Israel C. Russell with the caption “Benham Falls, Deschutes River, Crook County, Oregon.. 1903.”



The 1903 photo was take prior to dams on the Deschutes River, photo must have been taken in spring or early summer when flows were high. The 2005 photo was taken in fall after flows were reduced to begin storage in reservoirs upstream. Increased vegetation in 2005 photo obscures much of the rocky cliffs visible in 1903 photo.
