Railroads reached Puyallup in 1877 and provided a connection to worldwide cities and worldwide markets for the valley’s crops. At various times, they took hops, berries, and bulbs to the world and brought fame to the Puyallup Valley.

By the 1920’s, Puyallup had been served by the Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Union Pacific, and the Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroads, as well as by the Old Grapevine Line and the Interurban “Short Line” to Tacoma.

In his mural, Puyallup artist Darrell Harlow personalizes his mural about the railroad by painting “Goodbye Grandpa” depicting a poignant memory of the day he said his final goodbye to his grandfather, Edward Sickerman.

His grandfather had a serious heart condition and went to Indiana where his son, a doctor lived. He departed from the old Northern Pacific train station in Puyallup in the fall of 1949, and the artist never saw him again. Completed in 2001.
