The south flowing Sheksna River originates at the southeastern edge of the White Lake (Lake Beloye) in Russia. It forms part of the Volga Baltic waterway, the complicated system of rivers, lakes and canals linking the Volga to St. Petersburg.
The river has been much altered by dams and channelization along its original course. Various sources give a length of 86 t0 115 miles from the source to the point where it flows into the Rybinsk Reservoir on the Volga.
A large dam near the city of Sheksna has raised the water level of the river and the White Lake 5 to 6 feet creating a striking landmark at the river origin. The village of Krokhino, which stood at this location, was drowned by the rising waters. Buildings were demolished to avoid underwater obstacles for ships but the upper part of a stone church was left in place, rising from the water to mark the entrance to the Sheksna River.
Coordinates were taken from a cruise ship as we passed into the White Lake.
