The first Pony Express Statue was unveiled in St. Joseph, Missouri, on April 20, 1940, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Pony Express. The horse appears to leap ahead with the encouragement of the rider, who swings a quirt past its flank.

The bronze horse and rider, of heroic proportions, was created by Hermon A MacNeil, a famous sculptor, who carved the frescoes of many state capitals, as well as, the U. S. Supreme Court sculptures in Washington, DC.
The $16,000 Pony Express Statue in St. Joseph weighs two tons. It was part of a $63,000 Civic Center bond issue passed August 5, 1938, with bonds providing 55% of the cost, and the WPA, 45%. Postmaster General James Farley was present for the unveiling.
This monument is located on the corner of Tenth and Frederick streets.
