The printing is probably referring to printing on Calico cloth, which started in 1761. The principal articles of manufacture in Carlisle about that period were linen, checks, calicoes, and fustians. By 1816 there were three print works, where the printing of cotton was carried on very extensively, and various other concerns connected with the cotton trade, such as dying and bleaching. The spinning of cotton was carried on also to a considerable extent; there being eleven cotton-mills by 1816 in the town and immediate vicinity.
