The Ulverston Festivals Mural is big: 92 square yards and shows 29 annual festivals, including the Pantomime Horse Race, Lantern procession, egg rolling, motorbikes and beerdrinkers, St George & dragon (and damsel)... there are over 200 figures depicted, plus 3 dragons and various other animals.
The project was organised by Clancy's Youth Group. Artist Gill Barron worked with school children of Ulverston to design and paint the mural. In all 150 children were involved. The painting itself took 6 weeks.
The building it's painted on was voted "the ugliest building in Ulverston". It's a 1960's industrial brick, originally built as a supermarket. The only problem is that the mural is on the side in a narrow lane. It's hard to stand back and take it all in!
One of the characters is saying:
"Ulverston Town is so great,
we know how to celebrate.
It doesn't matter if you're late,
because next week they'll be another fete!"
