The Catholic Diocese of Baker was established in 1903 and includes all of Oregon east of the Cascade Mountains. Ground was broken for the Cathedral in 1905, and the building was completed three years later. The Cathedral was constructed of volcanic tuff quarried about twelve miles east of Baker City. Many prominent building in Baker City were built of the same material in the early 1900s.
