St. Margaret's chapel was founded in 1338, so this chapel has stood here for 700 years.

In 1338 Sir William de Thweng, Lord of Staveley built St. Margaret's and gave the land to support a chaplain.

St Margaret's remained a chapel for 500 years within the Parish of Kendal until 1858 when the church apart from the tower was demolished.
For 300 of the 500 years the service of Baptism and Burials was not permitted until 1651. Prior to this bodies had to be carried to Kendal for burial,in spite of this restriction the chapel played a key role in the life of the growing communit. It was the only large building where all could meet.

From about 1530 to 1859 the curate doubled up as a schoolmaster and the school was held in the chapel itself.

Local people took it in turns to be church wardens and their job was to collect money for the repairs to the chapel which was re roofed at least twice.
