In the early 1990s the Trail Blazers realized that they were playing in the oldest and smallest arena in the NBA. The old Memorial Coliseum seated fewer than 13,000, and had no luxury boxes. To remain competitive, the team and the city arranged financing to build a top replacement. The Rose Garden opened across the plaza from the old Coliseum in time for the 1995 season. With a 60% larger capacity on three levels, luxury suites, more restrooms and concessions, and a larger concourse, this is a venue that should serve Portland for decades.
