The church at Thwaites(the village is also known as Hallthwaites) is surprisingly large and impressive for the size of the congregation it serves from Thwaites and surrounding hamlets.
The parish of Thwaites consists of 3 hamlets,The Green,BroadGate and Ladyhall,they all use St. Anne's church.
Thwaites is situated on the Duddon estuary,half way between Millom and Broughton in Furness
The first church here was built in 1721 and was rebuilt in 1807.the original building was a chapel of ease for Millom,the new church built in 1805 was complete with a steeple and 2 bells.
until 1826 the Parson was also the schoolmaster the Reverend John Ormandy he was the last in the area to hold the duel post and actually received a grant from "Queen Annes bounty".
