From   Missouri - A Guide to the "Show Me" State - Tour 1 - Arrow Rock section:

ARROW ROCK SPRING provided a water supply for Indian tribes, travelers to the Far West, and early villagers.

Big Spring in Arrow Rock was important along the Santa Fe Trail in the 1820's. The travelers starting in Franklin would ferry across the Missouri River at Arrow Rock and filled their water barrels at this spring before heading further west along the trail. The development of the spring house was done during the Great Depression by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The spring continues to flow.
