It was a cold morning when the sun rose over Stones River on December 31, 1862, and the area around Murfreesboro was about to witness a battle that would change the tide of the Civil War. For the next three days Union and Confederate Forces fought one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. By the time the Confederate Army withdrew in the afternoon of January 2, 1863, more than 3,000 men lay dead and almost 16,000 more lay wounded. Some of these men spent as much as seven agonizing days on the battlefield before help could reach them. The two armies sustained nearly 24,000 casualties, which was almost one-third of the 81,000 men engaged.

Today the National Park Service is able to protect only about 20% of the actual battlefield; the remaining 80% has been developed and is in private hands. The battlefield features a 2-miles driving tour and the visitor’s center is home to a small museum. Admission to the visitor’s center and battle is free.
