'Dangerous Liaisons' by Philip Jackson.
It's based on the mask and inspired by the Maschera Nobile of the Venice of the 17th and 18th centuries.
This elegant costume hid the identity of its wearer and allowed them to move about the city unrecognised.
Thus Love affairs, intrigues and vendettas could take place without the fear of discovery.
