This monument stands as a memorial to the Confederate Soldiers from the State of Tennessee who fought and died during the Battle of Franklin, which took place on November 30, 1854. The battle began at bout 4 p.m. and was over by 9 p.m. During the 5 hour battle, over 6, 000 Confederate Troops were killed or wounded. The battle also claimed the lives of six Confederate Generals. The Battle of Franklin is often called "the bloodiest five hours of the Civil War."
The Tennessee Memorial stands as a tribute to the Tennessee Veterans who fought here during those 5 bloody hours. The inscription on the memorial reads:
"On a November afternoon in 1864, brave Confederate Sons of Tennessee moved forward into battle against federal lines entrenched two miles north. Winstead Hill served as the place of assembly and was an observation point during the battle.
Courage and sacrifice became the order of the day as nearly 7,000 Confederate Soldiers failed to leave the field of battle. This battle at Franklin was the most brutal of the decisive Tennessee Campaign of the winter of 1864. The Army of Tennessee would fight on until war’s end in 1865."
