The City of Warren, Michigan was founded in 1830. Shortly afterward, the Warren Union Cemetery was created along Chicago Road. This land was adjacent to a small cemetery owned by a local church. Over the decades since, the church has changed hands a number of times and the two distinct cemeteries have become one area with two owners (and a sharp dividing line right down the middle).
Today, the local Methodist church controls and maintains the easter half of the cemetery but the western half, the old Warren Union Cemetery, is officially "abandoned." As a result, many of the 19th century grave stones have been toppled or have sunk in well below the surface of the ground.
Mike organized a work group to rehabilitate the cemetery. He lifted and restored headstones where possible, cleaned overgrowth of shrubs and vines, and provided a marked grid system to aid in locating burial sites.
