1806 - June 29. Lewis and Clark, returning from the Pacific, reach
Travelers' Rest near mouth of Lolo Creek; then next day divide the expedition to
explore vast areas before their reunion at the mouth of the Yellowstone, August
12. September 23. Lewis and Clark arrive at St. Louis.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition stopped at Travelers' Rest during there trip
west and again on there return east. The site is listed as a National
Historic Landmark and is located in the Travelers' Rest State Park. The
area designated as the Landmark was originally about a mile from the location
now designated, the change was as a result of a multi-disciplinary research
project which definitively identified the correct location. The area now
has an interpretive trail and visitors center.
