When the track was turned into a turnpike (toll road) they had to place a milestone every mile and mark the parish boundaries. Not all Turnpikes have this frequency. This is on a road, now by passed by the modern A591.
Interestingly, the modern route to Windermere is 9 miles via Staveley. The Turnpike would have taken a more direct route via Crook.
