History sign on the Baker Loan and Trust Building in Baker City Historic District.
Marker Name: Baker Loan and Trust Building
Marker Text: Prominent local businessman William Pollman contracted to have the Baker Loan and Trust Building built in 1910, after a major fire destroyed another building on the site, along with two buildings to the south.
The building was designed by architect C.F. Hummel of Boise to conform to the new Osborn Building to the south. The granite trim on the first story and the polished granite surrounding the entrance provided a dignity suitable for a financial institution.
The Baer Mercantile grocery store occupied the rear of the building during its early years. The Baker Commercial Club, a precursor to the chamber of commerce, had club rooms and an office on the second floor.
