From   Missouri - A Guide to the "Show Me" State - Route 1 section:

This passage is written about Florissant, suburb of St. Louis.

Most of the streets were named for either French or Spanish Saints.  The large German immigration during the nineteenth century is represented by the slim spire of the Sacred Heart Church at the crest of the slope.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church was originally formed to serve the increasing German population setting in the Florissant area. The other Catholic Church, St. Ferdinand was French based. Many of the early German settlers spoke neither English or French. The Sacred Heart parish dates to 1867 and the present church building was built in 1893. The church is in a Gothic Revival style with it dominating spire.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church remains a very active parish in Florissant and is a contributing property in the St. Ferdinand Central Historic District.
