Luther Perking was one of the most accomplished guitar players in Country Music. It was Luther that developed the unique “boom-chicka” sound that was made famous by Johnny Cash.

Luther Perking was a native of Como, Mississippi and grew to become one of the most famous “rockabilly” guitar players in country music. He was dedicated to constantly trying to improve his guitar talents and was always adding more intricate dimensions to his own creations. One such creation was the unique “boom-chicka-boom” sound that will forever be linked with Johnny Cash. The unique style that is Luther Perkins can be heard throughout the music industry from 1955 until his death in 1968. Luther Perkins is buried in the Hendersonville Memorial Park in Hendersonville, Tennessee, just a few yards from his friend Johnny Cash.

Luther Perkins was born in Como, Mississippi on January 8, 1928. Luther moved to Memphis, Tennessee in the 1950’s where he met Roy Cash. Roy introduced Luther to his Brother Johnny and the two soon became fast friend. For the better part of the next 15-year Johnny Cash and Luther Perkins were not only friends but also constant music companions. It was Luther that developed the unique “boom-chicka” sound would be forever associated with Johnny Cash. The highlight of Luther’s Career came on January 13, 1968 when Luther, Johnny and the Tennessee Three performed two live shows inside the walls of California’s Folsom Prison. One of these shows was tape and contained not only many of Johnny’s hit songs, but also what many regard as Luther’s best guitar work. This album went on to become one of the greatest albums in music history. It also contains the last known recording of Luther Perkins guitar work. In the early morning hours of August 3, 1968, Luther home near Nashville caught fire, and the master guitar player was pulled from the burning home and taken to Vanderbilt University Hospital where here died on August 5, 1968. He is buried near his friend Johnny Cash, in the Hendersonville Memorial Park in Hendersonville Tennessee.
