A Carnegie Library still very much in use today as Kendal's main library. Easily found on the north end of the main street. Above the entrance, carved into the wooden door frame, is the legend: Let There Be Light.

This library is a fine building made from Old Red Sandstone quarried on the west coast of Cumbria. It includes glass panels in the main ceiling, plus long, high windows down the side of the building to let in plenty of light for those reading or searching for books.

The grand entrance leads into a circular foyer with a cupola type ceiling. Off to the sides are two smaller rooms, used for the Children's section and the Audio library. Straight ahead is the main floor, on two levels.

The library has internet access (for a fee) plus a good collection of local books, especially local geology, mountaineering and history. A local studies room is upstairs.

This Carnegie Library was opened on the 20th of March 1909 by Kendal Mayor Mr J. Banks, Andrew Carnegie’s representative Dr Morrison was unable to attend due to an injured back. It replaced a previous library in the market place which was much smaller. Incorporated into the floor of the entrance lobby is the Kendal coat of arms.
